I don’t care what this article is, that photo is getting reTumbl’d.

Hahahah oh Ron Swanson.
Is it possible to OD on social networking or life in general? I’m just wondering if I should be worried for my health or not. Sometimes it’s great to post different things on my different networks. Between three facebook pages I upkeep (personal, fanpage, station group), two twitters (personal and station) plus a blogspot blog, this tumblr, and my pinterest (which I have yet to use - but people follow me for some reason), it all seems like a bit much. Kind of like that last run on sentence explaining it. With the internet set up as it is now, people expect updates on everything, all the time. Don’t get me wrong, I love keeping people up to date and being entertaining - this is why I’m an entertainer. Perhaps I’m expecting too much of myself to be updating more than I do currently, or perhaps my mind is on overdrive from covering 3 positions on top of my own at work. Being in charge has it’s perks, but it’s also a LOT of work and stress. I remember when I didn’t have stress… I think I remember it. There was sunshine and naps involved I’m pretty sure - though my bank account was sad for me. Back to the main point of the overload though, how does one prioritize their networks? Should I be basing it on followers/reach or just what I feel like? Right now, it’s a jumble of what happens and my first response. Perhaps I’ll keep it there and try to lower my stress with some more boxing. That’s enough venting for today. Back to work!

I heard something remarkable today from the students of Columbia Academy at VanArts — they were having fun on-air. They sounded great (well, they almost always sound great!) But today, everyone sounded great!
Don’t get me wrong. We have a lot of fun here. But broadcasting is not always about just having fun. It’s a business. It’s about the money — like any business. But passion fuels this business. And that’s important.
Here’s something else that’s important: people listening to the radio generally doesn’t care if you are having bad day. They are looking|listening for companionship, cubicle-escapism, and|or whatever. And sometimes broadcasters forget that.
I love hearing a variety of emotions on the air. A ‘jock’ or ‘personality’ doesn’t always have to be funny — though if they are, that’s a wonderful thing.
But the one thing I do want to hear on a regular basis is an announcer who wants to be there… who sounds like the place their at is the very best place to be in the whole wide world… who is having fun!
That means interacting with (and loving) the music, talking with (not at) co-hosts, callers and listeners, and making me wish that I was in the control room with them having a great time.
Admittedly it’s hard to do that everyday — but that’s part of becoming a professional.
So what was different today?
- Columbia|VanArts changed formats (as we do every couple of weeks) to Classic Rock.
- We had a student return after a long medical leave injecting a refreshing new voice and personality into the mix.
- For the first time in 40-days and 40-nights, it’s not raining in Vancouver. There’s not a cloud in the sky. Not an umbrella to be seen for kilometers!*
If Cheap Trick, some new blood, and a precipitation-free Glass City is all it takes to make a broadcasting student’s day great, imagine what they might be capable of doing tomorrow. ~AJ
*Well, that’s not true. Vancouver is a city filled with little old ladies who don’t look their age thanks to the shady benefits of parasols and bumbershoots.
Get connected with Columbia|VanArts…
I remember these days. Now I get paid to have great days!
I got to 100 and then got bored of counting. It was mostly Percy Jackson posts and lemonade.
